The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill: Fortifying Our Digital Future

“The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill will make the UK’s digital economy one of the most secure in the world” – Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle.

April 2025 marks a significant step forward in the UK’s commitment to safeguarding its digital infrastructure with the announcement of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. As a UK-based data centre, we understand the critical role we play in this landscape, and we welcome this legislation designed to bolster the nation’s cyber defences.

This Bill arrives at a crucial time. With the increasing sophistication and frequency of cyber threats, ensuring the resilience of our critical infrastructure, including data centres now designated as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), is paramount.

Implications for UK Data Centres

The latest iteration of the Bill extends to cover data centres and although only UK data centres with 1MW capacity and above would be subject to the enhanced scrutiny, we believe this increased regulatory focus will ultimately benefit our customers too as we are continuously improving our protocols and systems to bolster our cyber security in line with these developments. By adhering to these elevated standards, we can provide an even more secure and reliable environment for your critical data and operations.

We anticipate a greater emphasis on:

  • Enhanced Incident Reporting: Expectation of swifter and more detailed reporting of significant cyber incidents to both regulators and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
  • Proactive Risk Management: A mandate for implementing comprehensive and proportionate measures to identify, assess, and mitigate cyber risks across all aspects of our operations.
  • Increased Regulatory Oversight: Empowering regulatory bodies, such as the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), with greater authority to gather information and ensure compliance with the new standards.

Our Commitment to Security

In addition to incident reporting, data centres, along with companies that provide “digital services”, would be legally required to inform customers who may be affected by an incident. Here at DCP, transparency has always remained paramount and we already actively communicate with our customers regarding security and where we think systems can be improved; where possible we like to adopt a preventative approach before responsive measures need to be implemented. All of this helps us to maintain our 99.99% uptime.

This legislation presents an opportunity to further strengthen the UK’s digital infrastructure and foster greater trust and confidence in our collective cyber resilience. We are dedicated to working collaboratively with regulators and our customers to navigate this evolving landscape and contribute to a more secure and resilient digital future for the UK.
